Relationships Matter Most

In legislative advocacy, the strength of relationships between Key People (KPs) and legislators often outweighs financial contributions or a bill's inherent merits. Personal connections can significantly influence legislative decisions, as legislators are more receptive to insights from trusted individuals within their network.

Building these relationships requires time and deliberate effort. Engaging in regular communication, providing valuable information, and demonstrating a genuine commitment to public service can establish trust and credibility with lawmakers. Such connections enable associations to effectively convey their perspectives, increasing the likelihood of legislative success.

While financial contributions and a bill's content are important, the personal rapport between key individuals and legislators often plays a more decisive role in the legislative process. Associations aiming to pass legislation should prioritize cultivating these relationships to enhance their advocacy efforts and achieve their policy objectives.

In order of most-important to least:

  1. Personal Relationships!
  2. Bill Merit
  3. PAC Money
